Justice Dipankar Datta was born on 9th February, 1965 to Mira and Justice (Retd.) Salil Kumar Datta in Calcutta. He came from a family with a strong legal background, with his father being a former Judge of the Calcutta High Court. After graduating from the prestigious Hazra Law College, University of Calcutta, in 1989 (first batch of the 5-year Law course), he enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of West Bengal the same year.
In his wide-ranging practice for around sixteen years before the Calcutta High Court, other High Courts, tribunals, and the Supreme Court of India, he represented various litigants including the State of West Bengal, Union of India, and multiple statutory authorities. He specialized in Constitutional and Civil cases.
He was elevated as a permanent Judge of the Calcutta High Court on 22nd June 2006. On 28th April 2020, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. After more than two and a half years at the helm, he assumed charge as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 12th December 2022. He is due to demit office on 8th February 2030.
